What to expect at an appointment

JD office photoAre you thinking about booking an appointment with me but don’t know what to expect?

Despite the good it can do, meeting with a new health care professional can sometimes be stressful. Like any new relationship, you don’t know if it will be a good fit.

In this post, I’d like to remove a bit of the mystery by sharing what to expect.

First, you may know that you can book a free 15-minute discovery call with me. These sessions are online, and help me to learn about your issue so that I can determine whether I can help (usually, the answer is YES).

Here’s how to make the most of them:

  • Think about how to clearly describe what you are going through. If it helps, write it down.
  • I’ll probably ask how the condition is affecting your life, or what feeling better would look like for you, so think about that as well.
  • Give me a sense of what the rest of your life looks like—work, family, mental and physical health—so that I can know the context.
  • Let me know about any past work you may have done to work on your issue so that I can know what you’ve tried, plus any medications you may be taking.

After you share your notes, I’ll share a few ideas on how I think I might be able to help, based on my years of seeing many patients, often with similar conditions! I’ll discuss options to move forward, and you can decide on next steps.

Next post, I’ll share what my more formal intake looks like, once you become a patient!
