You’ve read here before that I advise patients to try to get lots of fruits and vegetables into their diet. If that news overwhelms you, I thought I’d share a few ways to get more fruit in, especially in the harvest season when local fruits are more available:
Add fruit to breakfast: a handful of blueberries on your cereal or on your yoghurt can add a nice twist to summer mornings.
Add fruit to salads: try a topping of dried cranberries or raisins with your favourite greens. Or slice up an apple! Salad toppings can also be a way to get more healthy nuts into your diet, like walnuts or pumpkin seeds.
Pack a fruit snack: apples, peaches and plums are a great portable food to take with you on the run – keep some on hand in a bowl in the kitchen to encourage everyone in your household to remember them.
Choose fruit for dessert: this can be in the form of a baked desert like cobblers, but also as a whole fruit like an apple or a fun fruit you may not eat as often, like cherries in the summer.
What’s your go-to local fruit?
