Veggie inspiration

Veggies graphicYou may be reading lots lately about how important our gut microbiome is and wondering what you can do to improve yours.

The answer? Eat lots of plant foods!

The best indicator of your gut function is how many different plant foods you have a week. Variety is key.

That means not just your vegetables and fruits but herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains – I recommend patients try for 30 different plant foods a week!

You read that right: 30 different plant foods a week!

Not servings, but variety is important. This helps improve the health of the microbiome in the gut! And the microbiome is an important marker of your overall health. Good probiotics outcompete bad bacteria in the gut. Probiotics grow in the presence of fibres from vegetables and plant foods!

Why not try it this week? Start small. Maybe add some fresh basil to your tomatoes. Throw some pumpkin seeds into your salad for a nutty crunch. And swap your chicken for chick peas for one meal. Whatever works for you, just mix it up!
